Thuan Beng Saw - Endogenous transepithelial electric potential and cell elimination

Cell elimination is fundamental to development and homeostasis. While the role of cell/tissue mechanics in this process is appreciated, the involvement of other biophysical parameters — such as bioelectricity — is less known. One important bioelectric parameter is the transepithelial potential, long studied for its role in nutrient absorption but poorly understood in the context of cell event regulation. I will discuss recent progress using new in vitro tools and culture systems that enable us to manipulate and measure this endogenous potential. Our findings reveal that transepithelial potential consistently correlates with cell elimination rates across different perturbational situations. This points to a role for the potential in regulating cell elimination, operating alongside cell crowding to influence epithelial homeostasis.
