Thomas Clavel - Back to the future : Gut microbiome through the lens of anaerobic cultivation - SFR-B2S

Gut microbiomes are essential for human health and play a causal role in the development multiple chronic diseases. However, despite 20 years of microbiome research, half of the microbial diversity in gut microbiomes is still unknown. This is a major obstacle for further development in the field. There is a renewed interest in anaerobic cultivation techniques, because they enable the description of novel taxonomic and functional diversity and provide the foundation for exploring microbial functions and defining the molecular mechanisms that underlie microbe-microbe and microbe-host interactions. In this seminar, Thomas Clavel will give an overview of the importance of studying gut microbiomes. Specific focus will be put on technical innovations to boost functional microbiome research using anaerobic cultivation. Specific examples on new taxonomic and functional diversity and how to design and use synthetic communities of cultured gut bacteria will be given.

CV du conférencier :
Pr. Clavel a effectué ses études agronomiques en France puis a obtenu un doctorat en microbiologie en 2006 à l'Institut de nutrition humaine sous la direction de Michael Blaut (Potsdam, Allemagne). Il a ensuite passé 11 ans à l'Université technique de Munich (Allemagne), d'abord en tant que post-doctorant, puis en tant que chef de groupe junior sous le mentorat de Dirk Haller.
Depuis 2017, il dirige son groupe de recherche indépendant à l'hôpital universitaire RWTH Aachen (Allemagne), en compagnie d’excellents collègues tels que Marianne Grognot, Joel Selkrig, Oliver Pabst, Mathias Hornef).
