Made In India (1998 – 35 mm, 92 min, colour, original version with English/French/German subtitles, documentary)
In the state of Gujarat, a group of women developed an original model of trade union under the name SEWA (Self Employed Women’s Association). In 1998, the organisation counted 217,000 members across India. SEWA seeks to organise self-employed women — often poor workers engaged in a wide range of occupations, working from home, in the streets or in the fields, without fixed employers and frequently on a day-to-day basis. Coming from different religions and castes, they founded their own cooperative bank and have developed initiatives in health and education. Inventive and determined, they have stepped out of the shadows. The film traces SEWA’s journey through the voices of six of its members.
Screenings on the first floor of the Maison St-Gervais. Free admission, subject to availability.
